Chopin was never exactly a premiere celebrity during his life. He always seemed to live reasonably well once he became modestly established, but his sullen demeanor (not to mention a slew of health problems) seemed to come in between him and legendary status during his life. When Beethoven was selling out concertos in Paris multiple nights a month, Chopin taught in the city that found his reserved and atmospheric piano ballads a little too moody for their own good.
1831 was the turning point for Chopin. Robert Schumann publicly endorsed the young 21- year old piano student. Schumann has his own definitive legacy well intact, and that worked well to bring Chopin’s signature style to a larger audience. His classical piano music became a defining trait of the early romantic era.
Chopin is considered an under-appreciated master of the craft. He is often discussed in the big three of the romantic era composers that include Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert. But, he rarely tops these three incredible piano masters. His style was always more dependent on the piano, and the basis’ of the songs were built around what could be deemed straightforward and melodically propelled piano lines.
The International Chopin Piano Competition has been held every five years in Warsaw, Poland. It is a world-renowned competition that is solely dedicated to the piano balladry and beauty of Chopin’s best and most overlooked work. Enthusiasts dive vivaciously into some of his Paris-written work, including Nocturnes of Opp. 9 and 15 and the Sonata in B-flat minor, Op. 35. The competition is small enough to be realistically achievable by anyone that retains their piano tutorials. having a tangible and concise goal to reach for can drive greater momentum and motivation for practicing piano.
Chopin deserves to be in the top of all discussions about the romantic era. Though his style was always notorious through its simple construction, Chopin has captivated audiences for decades. The International Chopin Piano Competition displays this with virtuous dedication. Over 80 years running, the competition highlights how the modest and subdued approach of Chopin is undervalued and
incredibly touching.
